Alabama voters will have a third option on their November presidential ballots. Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate, will appear on every ballot in Alabama on Nov. 8, the Alabama Green Party announced today.
Dr. Stein, a practicing physician with two Harvard degrees, was the Green presidential candidate in 2012, when she received more votes than any other female presidential candidate in history, according to her campaign.
Because of restrictive ballot access rules in Alabama, Stein will appear on the ballot as an independent rather than as the Green candidate. Alabama Greens spearheaded a petition drive that netted more than 9,500 signatures in support of Stein’s candidacy, far more than the 5,000 required.
Alabama Green Party members credited the win to scores of volunteers committed to economic, social, and environmental justice and increasingly opposed to the two-party system.
“This was a shining example of the power of the people defeating the efforts of the political and corporate elite,” said Tyler Henderson, Alabama Green Party chair. “More and more Alabamians realize that the Democratic and Republican parties do not benefit working people, women, minorities, the poor, the immigrant community, the LGBTQ+ community, or anyone other than themselves and those monied interests who fund their campaigns.”
We did it! Thanks to everyone who helped gather signatures!
